Halloween is an annual holiday that takes place on October 31st. The custom dates back to the ancient Celtic celebration of Samhain, when people lit bonfires and dressed up in costumes to fend off ghosts. Pope Gregory III established November 1 as a day to celebrate all saints in the ninth century. All Saints Day soon incorporated elements of Samhain's customs. In the late 1800s, there was a move in America to mold Halloween into a holiday more about community and neighborly get-togethers than about ghosts, pranks and witchcraft. At the turn of the century, Halloween parties for both children and adults became the most common way to celebrate the day. All Hallows Eve, and later Halloween, was the night before. Trick-or-treating, carving jack-o-lanterns, celebratory parties, donning costumes, and eating treats have all become part of Halloween's tradition. When it comes to financial success, spooky Halloween films have a lengthy track record of being box office smashes. The “Halloween” franchise, based on the 1978 original picture directed by John Carpenter and starring Donald Pleasance, Nick Castle, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Tony Moran, is a classic Halloween film. In the film "Halloween," a little child named Michael Myers murders his 17-year-old sister and is sentenced to prison, only to elude capture as a teen on Halloween night and seek out his old house and a new victim.
